Friday the 13
'ight it got me!!!!! Peep out my Friday the 13 story this year.
Ok, had a middle school dance that day. The day, nothing out the ordinary. I did go in a little early so I can make it to the school on time, dance started at 7. I get there bout 15 till 6 and this little homie thats been my little helper for the last few dances is there. I say hi to him and we unload the gear, set up and everythings fine.
Now Since it's sort of a small group, 250-300 I use a small speaker system and for the last 2 years (been doing there dances that long) I've always used one outlet. I always knew this wasnt a good look, but it's been ok all the other times. I have thought about using a second outlet so I dont trip the breaker, but I tryed that once already and the nearest one is one in this utility closet and it took me 30 mins to get someone to open it that time.
Well this gig is like all the rest...REQUEST up the ass!!!! Dont you think if the song is on the local radio station's most played list that week I'm going to play it. These kids just think I need to be told what to play. I think this time was the worst...it was every 30 secs I had to stop to take yet another request so i could never get in a groove or "the zone".
30 mins left in the gig and this is where it all goes wrong. Out of nowhere all my gear and lights shut off!!!!! Yup I get the "FUCK!!!" reaction. I knew I tripped the breaker, but I was just hopeing some little punk kid pulled the plug. I look at it and it's in. I have the extension cords with LED lights in the plug to let you know it has power, well it wasnt on. I grab a extra extension cord I have and run to the other side of the room and plug it in, run back and plug the two together. Everything lights up..... Now while I'm doing this I did notice the kids started booing and then started chanting "you suck"..... I go to my laptop and Serato is not reponding to anything I do. I unplug all the usb's and connect them to my backup laptop up that's ready to go under the table and quickly find the last song I was playing and load it up and play it. I jump on the mic and just say "hay in 2 years this is the first it's happen, oh well guess I do suck"....in all it must have been less then 2 mins, maybe just a min and a half, but let me say it was the loooongest mins EVER!!!!
Oddly bout a hr before it happened I got a strange case of the "hand shakes". Right then I knew something bad was going to happen and it suuure did.
